FUNERAL FEES – GRACE UNITED CHURCH
Many families request information about the usual honoraria and fees at the time of funerals and memorial services. The following is offered as a guideline; however, the church is always willing to help families at this special time of need:
Facility $ 100.00 Organist $ 75.00 (if requested by the family)
Minister $ 100.00 Soloist $ 50.00 (if requested by the family)
Janitor $ 50.00 Ushers $ 100.00 (if requested by the family)
Music Leader $ 50.00 (if requested by the family)
The facility fee includes the use of the sanctuary, hall and kitchen. Grace United Church has a built-in sound system and has the capacity to project images along with audio (Power Point). Families who would like to use this technology need to provide their own computer and ensure that their equipment will connect and be compatible with that in the church. Families may also choose to provide their own soloist, organist and ushers.
Should a funeral be conducted in another facility, a single separate payment from the family/funeral director will be made to the church office, for distribution to the minister, organist and/or soloist.
Funeral Lunch Options
After the service, many people wish to have a reception. This is helpful, as it allows families and friends to gather and share stories and memories and offer support to one another. The minister will contact the UCW if lunch is requested. The following are options for families to consider:
(a) Families can make their own arrangements for lunch. Kitchen use is included in the facility fee.
(b) The United Church Women will serve the lunch that has been provided by the family
at a cost of $ 100.00.
Families often ask about memorial donations.
Monies may be donated to charities of one’s choice.
There is a Memorial Fund at Grace United Church.

Baptism Policy
Grace United Church, Meadow Lake

What We Believe – Baptism
Baptism is a symbolic action that signifies the new life God gives us as we join the church community. Baptism uses water as a symbolic cleansing that signifies the acceptance of new life within the church family. The sacrament of baptism is the single rite of initiation into the Christian community, the church.
The United Church offers baptism to all ages. We believe the gift of God’s love doesn’t depend on our ability to understand it, so we baptize people as infants right up through adulthood. With children, instruction is given to parents or sponsors to equip them for the child’s Christian nurture. During the ceremony, which usually takes place as part of a regular worship service, everyone in the congregation pledges support for the child and their parents.
Baptism is not a requirement for God’s love. We believe people who die without baptism are in no way condemned, lost, or damned.
Baptism in the United Church is recognized by all denominations of the Christian church that practise infant baptism. Similarly, if someone has already been baptized in another church at any age, the United Church recognizes their baptism and welcomes them as Christians.
Baptism Preparation
When families or individuals contact the church office or minister and request the sacrament of baptism, the minister will get in touch with them to arrange a meeting between the minister and the families or the person to be baptized, if of sufficient understanding, to discuss baptism and to gather information to present to the Session Committee and the Official Board. Baptism is a part of a regular Sunday worship service. The family or the person to be baptized chooses the Sunday in consultation with the minister.
In keeping with the policy of the United Church of Canada (The Manual 2019), all baptismal requests must go to the Official Board (the governing body) for the advance approval. “In an emergency where there is no time to get advance approval of a baptism, the person who baptizes must inform the governing body at its next meeting, and ask the governing body to confirm the decision to baptize.” (The Manual, B.3.2.2 Emergency Baptism, p.58).
Following the approval, the minister and the church secretary prepare the baptism ceremony including bulletin, the baptism certificate, and the baptism candle in cooperation with the Session Committee.
Baptism Ceremony
The celebration of baptism will be a part of a regular Sunday worship service and consist of the following ceremonies conducted by the minister and Clerk of Session, or substitute Session Committee member:
Statement of Purpose
Presentation of Candidate(s)
Profession of Faith and Promises
Congregational Commitment
Affirmation of Faith
Pouring of Water & Prayers of Thanksgiving
The Act of Baptism
Marking with the Sign of the Cross
Blessing & Presentation of Certificate
Lighting a Baptismal Candle given to the Candidate(s)
Declaration and Congregational Welcome
The families are allowed to present a gift to the candidates at the time the baptism certificate is presented. The families are also allowed to take photos during the ceremony (without camera flash) and after the Sunday worship service.
